Sexism, Strength and Dominance: Masculinity in Disney Films (via sanjaynewton)
Disney is often a target of critical analysis. However, it is also one of the major media players in our culture.
The comments posted to this mini-doc showcase how pervasive media has become in the creation of the self. Critically examining a movie or t.v. show comes off to some folks as an afront to their own lives, or the people they think they are. The most common charge is “reading too much” into the movies. That they are “just” movies.
Nothing is “just” anything. A refusal to accept this is a refusal to see how the world in which we live influences us, both positively and negatively.
There’s nothing wrong with questioning how Disney chooses to portray their male characters. It’s when you don’t question, when you passively watch those characters (and their interactions with others), that is the problem.
